Things we love: Made in Canada!

Canada is a huge country with so much to offer  – expansive landscapes, amazing food, even more amazing people, and amazing wildlife, all of which serves to inspire so many makers across this country. So much our country’s collective pride is wrapped up in the fact that so many Canadians weren't born here but instead chose to be here...a wise choice, in our opinion! It's Canada's official birthday next week, so it's time to celebrate all things Canadian! Most of our makers here at Village General Store are Canadian (as are we!) and we just think that Canadian-made is the bees knees!  Here are a few reasons why we think that you too will love Canadian Made! Rise up, Sisters!

This came across our desk today and it struck a chord - we deem it to be share-worthy! May it inspire you to be the best you possible, and to spread goodness wherever you go! If there is to be a change, it will come from us. Right here. Where we stand. Women were always the story-givers, the memory-keepers, the dreamers. Listen now to the land's long dreaming. Do you see what it's dreaming? It's dreaming you. ~ Sharon Blackie, "If Women Rose Rooted: A Journey to Authenticity and Belonging" Rise up, sisters, as midwives to humanity as we choose a way of life that brings justice and goodness to plants, animals, humans, and our dear beleaguered planet. This is...

Things we love: Waxed Canvas

Waxed cotton/waxed canvas is a fabric that is all the rage these days. It is a heavy cotton canvas with paraffin or natural beeswax base wax woven in or applied to the cloth.  But the truth is, the origins of this fabric are far from new - in England and Scotland in the 1600's, sailors started coating fabric with oils and grease to help catch the wind of their sails . Mariners applied fish oils and grease to their heavy sailcloth, and then cut with the leftover scraps they cut waterproof capes to keep themselves dry.  When Egyptian cotton began to be traded, mariners turned to it as an option for a lighter fabric, and in the mid...

Things we love: Family Game Time!

Some of my favourite memories as a child was playing cards, board games, or physical games with my siblings and cousins, or with my whole family. There is something special about family game times, where the whole family works together (or sometimes, against each other!) all in the name of fun. Games of all types aren’t simply fun for the whole family, they also provide many ways for kids to reinforce the skills they need for school, while having fun at the same time. Games are a great way to reduce stress. Laughing and having fun is the perfect way to forget about your worries, even if only for an hour!  They are also a great way to focus energy...

Once a Year Chance: Lilacs and Lilly of the Valley

There are things in the world that only happen at a certain time every year, especially here in north end of North America, where the dramatic weather of the seasons takes its toll. There is one longest day of the year. There is a season for things like spring edibles - morels and leeks and fiddleheads. The hot days of summer are days for cucumbers and warm tomatoes off the vine. But this time of year is one of my favourite, because the smells in the air are sweet and intoxicating - that's right, the lilacs and the Lilly of the Valley are in bloom! Lilacs only bloom once a year, for about three week, in early spring. There are...
